Affirming Care

What is affirming care?

At Room for Change, we stand firm in our commitment to ethical, affirming, client-centered care. We guide, we support, and we affirm—never dictate, pressure, or push an agenda.

Autonomy – Helping clients make decisions that align with who they are.
Do No Harm – Ensuring our work empowers, not dictates.
Justice – Treating every client with dignity and respect.
Fidelity – Staying true to our ethical principles and commitments to those we serve.

What does affirming care actually mean?

Affirming care is not about pushing an agenda, it’s about recognizing and respecting each client’s identity, values, culture, and lived experiences. It means:

  • Creating a safe, nonjudgmental space for clients to explore who they are.

  • Validating and supporting clients in their experiences, not trying to “fix” or change them.

  • Recognizing the impact of systemic oppression, trauma, and discrimination on mental health.

  • Helping clients make their own informed decisions, not imposing our personal beliefs on them.

What This Means at RFC

We uphold the highest ethical standards.

While we push back against injustice, we have never—and will never—compromise the integrity of our field. If something concerns you, ask us directly. Fear and misinformation do not lead to good decisions.

We Support Clients, Not Agendas

Therapy is about helping people find their own answers—not telling them who to be.
